The best way to prevent cavities is by brushing your teeth after eating and before going to bed. The latter is the most important because it is when you are asleep that your mouth is inactive, thus giving more room for bacteria to grow. During daytime, your mouth is constantly active when you do activities such as talking, eating and drinking, in which process the dirt is constantly flushed out.

We often get confused as to how many times we should brush our teeth. Do we need to brush after every meal? Most dentists recommend brushing your teeth twice: after breakfast and before bedtime. Too constant brushing may damage the gums through the vigorous movement of brush bristles.
