Tooth decay is influenced by what we eat, and how we take care of our teeth. Destroyed tooth structure does not regenerate, but, cavities can be stopped by treatment.

In filling the teeth, the decayed portion is drilled and replaced with a restorative substance (silver alloy, gold, porcelain, or composite resin). Crowns are used if the decay is extensive. The decayed area is removed and repaired, and a cap is fitted over the remainder of the tooth

A root canal, done by removing the tooth center, nerve and blood vessel tissue, is recommended if the nerve dies from decay or a traumatic blow. The roots are filled and a crown may be placed over the tooth if needed.
